Dear Packanack Lake Community,
We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and address recent questions regarding water quality, particularly related to algae concerns near the north end by the fingers and the East Beach. Your observations are noted and appreciated — community input plays an important role in helping us monitor conditions throughout the lake. We all love Packanack Lake, and when there are issues, it is frustrating.
As many of you know, certain areas of the lake, including the north end, East Beach, and other pockets with limited water flow, are more prone to algae buildup. While this is a natural challenge given the lake’s structure, an extensive system has been implemented over the years to assist as best as possible with the challenges present.
Our current issue is compounded by the removal of the bubblers from the fingers ahead of the dredging, which has been delayed from the initial start date. As of the writing of this email we have been informed by the town the dredging will be starting imminently. The porta-john delivered on Lake Drive East is related to this work.
Our contracted water quality company conducts weekly, on-site evaluations to monitor conditions and compare firsthand observations with collected data. Data is collected both through buoys as well as turbidity monitors positioned at various locations throughout the lake. When an issue is identified, a treatment plan is implemented as quickly as possible — typically within a few days. These plans are subject to New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) regulations, which govern both the types of treatments that may be used and how often they may be applied. Please note these do restrict both the type and frequency of treatments that may be implemented.
In response to the current situation, a permitted copper-based treatment was applied and followed up with an additional treatment. We are closely monitoring the results, and additional treatment options will be reviewed depending on how conditions evolve.
We appreciate your questions and continued engagement as we work together to care for the lake.
Sincerely,
Joseph Okaly & David Bowie PLCA Water Quality Governors
